Mike Williams "Further Ahead Than Anticipated"

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh said that wide receiver Mike Williams (knee) is "a lot further ahead than anticipated" after the team activated him off the Physically Unable to Perform list at training camp on Wednesday. When Williams was asked how realistic it is for him to play in the Week 1 regular-season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, he said: "I guess we've got to see." The 29-year-old is still recovering from a torn left ACL that he suffered in Week 3 of last year with the Chargers, and he won't take part in team drills at camp for another week or two. He's up in the air for the start of the regular season, and even if he's active, it seems likely that the Jets will ease him into a full workload, which will make the big-bodied downfield threat even more of a risky boom/bust option for fantasy lineups. But when he's 100%, he'll be the No. 2 wideout behind Garrett Wilson in New York.

Mike Williams Activated From PUP List

New York Jets wide receiver Mike Williams (knee) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on Wednesday, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport. This is promising news as the former Los Angeles Charger recovers from a torn ACL suffered in Week 3 of last season. The 29-year-old should have plenty of time to ramp up his activity before the Week 1 Monday Night Football contest against the San Francisco 49ers which is just over one month away. However, the team could still opt to bring him along slowly, so fantasy managers should check back for his latest injury updates. Williams is usually available outside the top 150 picks in redraft formats, so he's a low-risk, high-reward bench stash with spike-week potential. He's always been a volatile fantasy option, but since he'll be catching passes from Aaron Rodgers this year, he has legitimate fantasy football intrigue and upside.

Braelon Allen Listed As RB2 For Jets

New York Jets rookie running back Braelon Allen was listed as the top backup to Breece Hall on the team's first unofficial depth chart of the preseason on Monday. Allen was not really known for his pass-catching skills at Wisconsin, but he impressed the coaching staff in that regard in spring practices and early in training camp, so he currently has the leg up over fellow rookie Isaiah Davis and former fifth-rounder Israel Abanikanda for the RB2 role to open the 2024 season for the Jets. The 20-year-old fourth-round selection is currently the best handcuff option in deeper fantasy leagues for those that take Hall as their RB1 in fantasy. We'll be keeping a close eye on how Allen performs in the preseason as he looks to retain the RB2 role ahead of Week 1.

Allen Lazard Off To A Promising Start In Camp

New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard, who received a four-year, $44 million contract before the 2023 season, is off to a promising start in training camp this summer after posting just 23 catches last year. However, Lazard is viewed as a placeholder across from WR1 Garrett Wilson until Mike Williams (knee) is activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list. Working in Lazard's favor is that he has quarterback Aaron Rodgers' stamp of approval after they worked together in Green Bay. But Lazard isn't on the same level of Williams when both are healthy. The question is whether Williams can be the same player he was before his ACL surgery last fall. If he's not, Lazard could operate as New York's No. 2 option to help Rodgers balance the field. After a terrible 2023 showing, Lazard will be off the fantasy radar in most leagues unless Williams isn't ready for the start of the season.

Xavier Gipson Listed As Starter For Jets

New York Jets wide receiver Xavier Gipson is listed ahead of third-round rookie Malachi Corley as a starter on the team's first released depth chart. It's worth noting these depth charts aren't official yet, but team reporter Rich Cimini said Gipson has worked ahead of Corley during training camp. Gipson went undrafted out of Stephen F. Austin last year, but he was active for all 17 of New York's games and caught 21 passes for 229 yards. He also turned in 830 total return yards and one punt return for a touchdown. Star wideout Garrett Wilson figures to be the clear target hog in the New York offense, but Allen Lazard, Gipson, Corley, and Mike Williams (knee) could all make an impact as secondary options for Aaron Rodgers in what should be an improved passing attack.
