Israel Abanikanda Plunges Into The End Zone In Win

New York Jets running back Israel Abanikanda found the end zone in Saturday's preseason win over the visiting Washington Commanders in East Rutherford, but he only produced 17 yards on his six rushing attempts in the victory. He added an eight-yard reception. Abanikanda rushed up the middle in the fourth quarter, plunging his way into the end zone from two yards out to tie the game at 17 points apiece on Saturday afternoon against Washington. Around this time last year, Abanikanda lost a lot of handcuff upside to starter Breece Hall when the Jets signed veteran Dalvin Cook. This time around, however, the 21-year-old former Pittsburgh standout has a better chance of carving out a change-of-pace role in New York's backfield, but rookie fourth-rounder Braelon Allen poses a big obstacle after impressing on Saturday.

Braelon Allen Stakes Claim For RB2 Role

New York Jets running back Braelon Allen staked his claim as the team's top backup to starter Breece Hall in Saturday's preseason win over the visiting Washington Commanders at MetLife Stadium, rushing six times for a team-high 54 yards in the victory. Allen had a long run of 24 yards on Saturday afternoon against the Commanders, showcasing plenty of strength with his 235-pound frame. The 20-year-old power back out of Wisconsin was drafted by the Jets in the fourth round of this past spring's NFL Draft, and while he isn't likely to make a big impact in the receiving game, Allen sure looks like the handcuff to roster in fantasy leagues in New York's backfield over Israel Abanikanda and Isaiah Davis behind Hall at the moment. His next chance to impress arrives next Saturday against the hosting Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.

Jason Brownlee Fighting For Roster Spot

New York Jets wide receiver Jason Brownlee isn't a lock to make the 53-man roster but can help his cause by performing well in Week 1 of the preseason, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. Cimini notes that Brownlee had a slow start to camp but has started to trend in the right direction recently. As a result, it's imperative that he continues his "positive momentum" in order to make a push for a roster spot. Garrett Wilson, Mike Williams, Xavier Gipson, and Malachi Corley are all locks to make the team, which means Brownlee is competing with the likes of Allen Lazard, Irvin Charles, Lance McCutcheon, and Malik Taylor. The 25-year-old played in seven games (five starts) as a rookie last year, catching just five passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. He's firmly on the roster bubble and can be avoided in most fantasy formats.

Aaron Rodgers Gets Day Off Due To Rain

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is not dressed to practice on Thursday for precautionary reasons, according to head coach Robert Saleh. The Jets are being cautious because of the heavy rain all morning in New York, and they don't want to take the risk with their franchise signal-caller. Rodgers is already unlikely to play during the preseason this year, so this shouldn't affect his status for Saturday's exhibition opener against the visiting Washington Commanders in East Rutherford. The 40-year-old future Hall of Famer was beginning to show signs of decline back in 2022 with the Green Bay Packers before 2023's ruptured Achilles, so he's being drafted as more of a QB2 in fantasy drafts this summer. The weekly potential for Rodgers to post QB1 scores will likely be dependent on game scripts in 2024.

Mike Williams "Further Ahead Than Anticipated"

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh said that wide receiver Mike Williams (knee) is "a lot further ahead than anticipated" after the team activated him off the Physically Unable to Perform list at training camp on Wednesday. When Williams was asked how realistic it is for him to play in the Week 1 regular-season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, he said: "I guess we've got to see." The 29-year-old is still recovering from a torn left ACL that he suffered in Week 3 of last year with the Chargers, and he won't take part in team drills at camp for another week or two. He's up in the air for the start of the regular season, and even if he's active, it seems likely that the Jets will ease him into a full workload, which will make the big-bodied downfield threat even more of a risky boom/bust option for fantasy lineups. But when he's 100%, he'll be the No. 2 wideout behind Garrett Wilson in New York.
