Tommy Edman Nearing Rehab Assignment

St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist, ankle) is in St Louis and has been taking swings. The Cardinals would like to get him in a live batting practice and then send him out on a minor-league rehab assignment. Edman sprained an ankle on June 24 while fielding ground balls, briefly pausing his rehab from offseason right wrist surgery, but he's on the cusp of finally being cleared for game action. With a good chance of getting reinstated to the major-league roster shortly after the All-Star break in mid-July, Edman is someone to look for on fantasy waiver wires for rosters in need of speed. Last year, the 29-year-old switch-hitter tallied 25 doubles, 69 runs scored, and 27 stolen bases over 479 at-bats for the Cards.

Tommy Edman Suffers Sprained Ankle

St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman (ankle, wrist) sprained his ankle while fielding ground balls on Tuesday, according to manager Oliver Marmol. Edman's wrist rehab will now be put on hold while the severity of his ankle sprain is determined. It's yet another setback in what has been a frustrating year for Edman and his fantasy managers, as he has yet to play at all in 2024. It's especially frustrating for the 29-year-old after he had made some real strides in his recovery from right-wrist surgery. It's unclear how long his rehab will be put on hold, but hopefully Edman can still start a minor-league rehab assignment sooner than later. At this point, we probably won't see Edman until the second half of the season, but he should be a lineup regular for the Red Birds when he's finally cleared to make his 2024 debut.

Tommy Edman Progressing Closer To Rehab Assignment

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder/infielder Tommy Edman (wrist) recently spent four days in Florida ramping up baseball activities and is moving closer to starting a rehab assignment. Cardinals manager Oli Marmol is optimistic that Edman could return relatively soon. With a rehab assignment in the mix, a likely return to the Cardinals' active roster would be around the All Star game. The switch-hitter has been recovering from wrist surgery in the offseason and has yet to debut this season. When he is set to return he should be expected to start in the outfielder with rookie Masyn Winn performing well for the Cardinals. Michael Siani has been starting in centerfield for St. Louis and would be the likely candidate to move to the bench once Edman is activated. Fantasy managers should plan accordingly as soon as Edman begins his rehab assignment.
