Sandy Alcantara Playing Catch Off And On

Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara (elbow), who has been playing catch off and on, was rehabbing with the team on Monday in Kansas City. Alcantara initially felt discomfort in his right elbow on the 94th and final pitch of his Sept. 3 start against the Washington Nationals last year and was diagnosed with a right forearm flexor strain. An MRI later showed a right UCL sprain before he ultimately had Tommy John surgery. Alcantara began a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Sept. 21 but shut himself down after experiencing forearm tightness. The 2022 National League Cy Young winner will miss all of the 2024 season, but the good news is that he's been playing catch for months now and should be ready for the start of next year, barring any setbacks.

Sandy Alcantara Placed On 60-Day Injured List

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara (elbow) was put on the 60-day injured list Saturday. The move was made to clear a 40-man roster spot for the newly-signed Tim Anderson. Alcantara will miss the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October. The recovery time for Tommy John is roughly 14 months, so Alcantara should be ready by the time spring training rolls around next season. The 28-year-old was one of the better pitchers in the game in 2021 and 2022 but took a step back last season, finishing with a 4.03 FIP and 1.21 WHIP. He also struck out batters at his lowest clip since 2019, his first full season in the majors. Coming off a down 2023 and surgery, he might fly under the radar heading into drafts next year and makes for a nice bounce-back candidate.
