Jacob deGrom Throws 30-Pitch Bullpen Session

Texas Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom (elbow) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday and mixed in his changeup, but he's still "a ways away," according to manager Bruce Bochy. deGrom is making progress, but it's slow progress after he underwent Tommy John surgery last June. After perhaps a few more bullpen sessions, the 36-year-old could begin facing live hitters during batting practice. He'll need to go on a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment after that, so fantasy managers probably shouldn't expect deGrom to be an option for Texas' starting rotation again until sometime in August. deGrom made only six starts in 2023 after signing a five-year, $185 million deal, but in those six starts he struck out 45 and walked only four in 30 1/3 innings. He's one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball when he's healthy, but it's unrealistic to expect much out of him in 2024.

Jacob deGrom Throwing Out To 90 Feet

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (elbow) has extended his throwing program out to 90 feet, which is a new step in his recovery. deGrom continues to work his way back from the second Tommy John surgery of his career in June of last year, and the defending-champion Rangers hope to have him back in their rotation at some stage later this summer. From a fantasy perspective, it's difficult to call deGrom a must-stash with such a fluid recovery timetable. Few other pitchers have his level of upside when healthy; the 35-year-old two-time Cy Young Award winner produced a 2.67 ERA (1.54 FIP), 0.75 WHIP, and 45:9 K:BB across 30 1/3 innings during his debut season in Arlington a year ago. deGrom's progression in his throwing program is something that needs to be kept a close eye on, as the veteran right-hander could turn out to be a league-winning asset if he's available during crunch time of the fantasy season.

Jacob deGrom Officially Placed On 60-Day Injured List

The Texas Rangers officially placed right-hander Jacob deGrom (elbow) on the 60-day injured list on Friday to make room for right-hander Michael Lorenzen on the active roster. deGrom, who is recovering from surgery on his right UCL, started playing catch on Feb. 12 and resumed again on the first official day of spring workouts on Feb. 14, just under eight months after the surgery to fix his torn right UCL ended his 2023 season. It was the second Tommy John surgery for the 35-year-old veteran. General manager Chris Young said that deGrom is progressing well in his rehab with an eye on returning around August. He still has a long ways to go in his recovery and shouldn't be relied on for much, if any, fantasy production late in the second half of 2024 if he returns to Texas' starting rotation.
