Free-agent relief pitcher Andrew Chafin is reportedly drawing interest from the New York Yankees. The 34-year-old became a free agent this winter after the Texas Rangers declined his $6.5 million option for the 2025 campaign. Last season, Chafin posted a 3.51 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 70/31 K/BB ratio across 62 appearances with the Detroit Tigers and Rangers. The veteran southpaw has been a capable and trustworthy option for years now. The Yankees desperately need a reliable left-handed reliever, so the addition of Chafin would make sense for this roster. This bullpen already features Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, and Mark Leiter Jr., so Chafin's chances of getting regular saves is unlikely in the Bronx. That being said, Chafin wouldn't have ideal fantasy value there, but is a good fit for the team.
The Texas Rangers have declined their 2025 club option on left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin. The 34-year-old opened the 2024 campaign in Detroit but was eventually shipped to Texas before the trade deadline. Across 56 1/3 innings of work, Chafin held a 3.51 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and a 31:70 BB:K ratio. The southpaw generated whiffs at an elite 34.5% mark, which was evident in his excellent 28.5% K rate. However, he struggled to control his pitches as he carried a hefty 12.6% walk rate. Given his ability to generate swings and misses, fantasy managers should expect Chafin to have a high-leverage role in 2025. He could eventually become a target in leagues that score holds if he is pitching on a competing club.
The Texas Rangers are finalizing a deal on Tuesday to acquire left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin from the Detroit Tigers, according to sources. It's unknown what the Rangers are sending Detroit's way in exchange for Chafin. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw has had a strong year for the Tigers in relief, going 3-2 with a 3.16 ERA (2.53 FIP), a 1.38 WHIP, one save, 50 strikeouts, eight holds and 16 walks in 37 innings out of the bullpen in 41 appearances. In his new home in Texas, he'll most likely operate as a late-inning setup man in front of current closer Kirby Yates for the defending World Series champions. Chafin could have some more opportunities to pick up holds in his new digs, but the trade won't drastically affect his fantasy value in leagues that count holds.
