The Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday released veteran wide receiver John Ross (undisclosed) from their practice squad. Ross was active for one game with the Eagles this year and caught one of his two targets for a six-yard pickup and had been on the practice-squad injured list due to an undisclosed ailment since Oct. 21. The 29-year-old speedster will now go back on the open market and he's unlikely to sign with another team with only five weeks remaining in the 2024 season. The former ninth overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals back in 2017 out of Washington played in 10 games (one start) with the New York Giants back in 2021 and had 11 receptions on 20 targets for 224 yards and one touchdown. Ross did have seven scores in his second season in 2018 with Cincy and had a career-high 506 receiving yards the following year, but that was the extent of his production in the NFL.
The Philadelphia Eagles have elevated wide receivers Parris Campbell and John Ross from the practice squad prior to Sunday's Week 4 game against Tampa Bay. With A.J. Brown (hamstring) and DeVonta Smith (concussion) ruled out, the Eagles' are looking for depth at the position. Campbell had some promising stints with the Colts and is a former second-round draft pick. Ross has seen time with the Giants and Chiefs since he was drafted by the Bengals as the No. 9 overall pick of the 2017 draft. The duo will join Jahan Dotson and Johnny Wilson as the main healthy receivers for the Eagles.
Free-agent wide receiver John Ross worked out for the New Orleans Saints on Monday. Ross failed to make the Philadelphia Eagles' final roster out of training camp. He was once drafted as the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Ross also owned the record for the fastest 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine until 2024. However, he has never lived up to his pedigree and has recently bounced around the league. Ross would give the Saints a vertical threat and extra depth behind Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and A.T. Perry. Given that he has not played in a regular season game since 2021, Ross does not project to have much fantasy appeal if he were to be signed.
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver John Ross caught three of five targets for a team-leading 28 yards receiving in the preseason opener against Baltimore Friday night. The 28-year-old was a part of the starting group, which was the second-string, to open the game and played into the second half with backup quarterback Kenny Pickett. Ross led the starting offense in the receiving game and saw five targets alongside Britain Covey. The former first-rounder has been receiving praise throughout the offseason and seems to have an inside track on the No. 3 job in the Eagles receiving room. The speedster will look to have a late-career rebirth after being one of the more glaring first-round busts of the past decade.
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver John Ross was getting first team reps on Wednesday in OTAs, according to Eagles reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks. The 28-year-old agreed to a one-year contract with the Eagles on May 23 and has already begun to have opportunities with the first team. The former Washington product was selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals but has unfortunately been unable to perform in the NFL. He had a season-high of only 506 yards in 2019 and has yet to come close to that total over the past four seasons. He announced his retirement last summer but appears to be eyeing an NFL comeback. Currently, the Eagles wide receiver room is highlighted by A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith but is lacking a consistent number three option. Ross could become a name to mention throughout training camp in July if he continues to earn opportunities with the starting staff.
