The Tampa Bay Rays are expected to listen to trade offers on first baseman Yandy Diaz leading up to next Tuesday's trade deadline. According to sources, the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates are potential landing spots. Diaz opened the second half of the season last weekend away from the team due to a personal issue and was eventually placed on the restricted list, but he's been activated on Friday and is back at first while batting leadoff against the visiting Cincinnati Reds and left-hander Nick Lodolo. Fantasy managers will want to get the 32-year-old right-handed hitting veteran back in lineups this weekend. Diaz hasn't been quite as good as his lone All-Star campaign last year in Tampa, but he's still hitting a solid .273 (104-for-381) with eight homers and 46 RBI in 94 games played.
Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said that the team expects first baseman Yandy Diaz to be back with the Rays for Friday's series opener against the visiting Cincinnati Reds. Diaz wasn't with the team coming out of last week's All-Star break due to a personal matter and was eventually placed on the restricted list. If Diaz is back in the lineup on Friday night, as is expected, he'll have a tough matchup against Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo. But the 32-year-old veteran first baseman deserves to be returned to all fantasy lineups, as he's hitting .273/.329/.396 with eight home runs, 46 RBI and 35 runs scored in 381 at-bats this year for the Rays. He was even better in July in 11 games before the All-Star break, going 13-for-45 (.289) with a homer, five doubles and six RBI.
It's not clear yet when Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz will rejoin the team after being placed on the restricted list on Sunday due to a personal matter, with manager Kevin Cash saying that the Rays are "taking it day to day." Because of his personal matter, Diaz didn't travel with the team to New York on Thursday for the weekend series in the Bronx to open the second half of the season, and Tampa played short-handed on Friday night. Cash said on Sunday morning that there was "no real update" for Diaz. On Saturday, the Rays recalled infielder Curtis Mead from Triple-A Durham, and he was thrust into the starting lineup immediately against Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes and responded with a career-high-tying three hits. Mead hit .218 with a .545 OPS in his first stint with the Rays in 2024 and was slashing .278/.348/.500 with 10 homers in 59 games for Durham.
The Tampa Bay Rays placed first baseman Yandy Diaz on the restricted list on Saturday and recalled infielder Curtis Mead from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move. Diaz wasn't in the lineup on Friday for the start of the second half of the season in the Bronx against the division-rival New York Yankees due to a personal matter and will now miss a little bit more time. It remains to be seen how much additional time the 32-year-old will miss, but fantasy managers will want to check back regularly for more updates. While he's out, expect Isaac Paredes to play first base for the Rays. Amed Rosario is starting at third and batting leadoff for Tampa on Sunday against Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes. Diaz hasn't been quite as good as he was in 2023, but he's been useful in most fantasy leagues with a .273/.329/.396 slash line with eight homers and 46 RBI in 94 games played.
Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz will not play to start the second half of the season on Friday in the Bronx against the division-rival New York Yankees due to a personal matter. With Diaz away from the team, Isaac Paredes will move across the diamond to first base and will bat second, while Jose Caballero will man the hot corner and bat eighth against Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole. Richie Palacios is at second base and is batting leadoff for the Rays. It remains to be seen when Diaz will be back in Tampa's starting lineup, so fantasy managers will want to check back on Saturday before returning him to their starting lineups. The 32-year-old could be on the trade block this summer with the Rays falling out of contention. Diaz is a must-start when he's active and hit .273 (104-for-381) with eight homers, 46 RBI and 35 runs scored in 94 games in the first half.
