Milwaukee Brewers reliever Trevor Megill tossed a scoreless ninth inning to notch the first save of his career during Thursday's 7-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 30-year-old has been a pleasant surprise out of the bullpen for the Brewers and has been trusted to face the heart of the opponent's order multiple times this season. He has only given up one run in five appearances thus far and has picked up three holds. The Brewers ninth-inning situation has been a bit sporadic with Devin Williams (back) still recovering from injury, but Megill is now in the mix for saves alongside Joel Payamps. Both players deserve to be rostered in deeper leagues, while Megill holds even more value in formats that count holds as a scoring category.
The Milwaukee Brewers placed right-hander Trevor Megill (concussion) on the seven-day concussion list on Wednesday (retroactive to March 31) and recalled right-hander J.B. Bukauskas from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move. Megill hurt his head after contracting food poisoning. He was feeling faint and fell back and hit his head on the ground, suffering a concussion. Abner Uribe has recorded all three of the team's saves in the early going with Devin Williams (back) sidelined, with Megill serving as a late-inning setup man. The 30-year-old Megill had tossed two scoreless innings with a walk and three strikeouts out of the bullpen in the early going before getting hurt. With Megill out for at least a week, the Brewers' bullpen will be a little more vulnerable in the late innings.
Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Trevor Megill is off to a nice start this spring, tossing four innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts, and the big right-hander's fantasy stock is also on the rise due to the uncertainty surrounding the health of star closer Devin Williams (back). Williams is going for a second opinion regarding his sore back later this week, with Megill being one of Milwaukee's setup men alongside Joel Payamps for 2024. Even though Payamps has surrendered five earned runs this spring, he is likely to get the first crack at any save chances that would be freed up by any potential Williams absence to start the campaign. Fantasy managers shouldn't forget about Megill, though, after the fire-balling 30-year-old righty presented a 3.63 ERA (2.13 FIP), 1.35 WHIP, and 52:12 K:BB covering 34 2/3 frames for the Brew Crew last season. Keep him on watchlists for the time being.
