Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Roansy Contreras was claimed off of waivers by Texas Rangers earlier on Thursday according to Kiley McDaniel of ESPN. The 24-year-old logged 52 frames with the Angles last summer to the tune of a 4.33 ERA and 1.29 WHIP after being designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates in May. Contreras operated out of both the rotation and the bullpen in Los Angeles but never exceeded more than three innings in an outing. For now, fantasy managers should expect the right-hander to continue to be deployed out of the bullpen but could be given an opportunity to compete for a spot in the rotation during Spring Training.
Los Angeles Angels right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras threw a perfect ninth inning to secure his second save of the season in a 3-2 win over the New York Mets on Sunday. Contreras set down the bottom of the Mets order with a pair of strikeouts and a flyout. While this usage is a little bit frustrating for fantasy managers who have picked up either Ben Joyce or Hunter Strickland, it appears as though neither were available for this game after both pitched yesterday and had thrown a lot of pitches in the last few weeks. Joyce still seems like the preferred option here, but nothing is set in stone.
Los Angeles Angels pitcher Roansy Contreras was a possible option to start Sunday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Instead, the Halos went with Carson Fulmer and that ended up being a great decision. Contreras has been a shaky option throughout most of the season but he looked solid on Sunday. The right-hander worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second career save. The Angels didn't have many options with most of their high leverage relievers unavailable for this contest. Contreras got the rare save chance and will probably return to his role as a middle reliever now.
The Los Angeles Angels acquired right-hander Roansy Contreras from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations, according to sources. The Pirates had designated Contreras for assignment last Saturday. The 24-year-old Dominican hurler went 1-0 with the Pirates with a 4.41 ERA (5.01 FIP) and 1.65 WHIP with eight walks and 16 strikeouts in 16 1/3 relief innings over 12 outings out of the bullpen this year before being traded to the American League. In his four big-league seasons in Pittsburgh, Contreras has made 53 appearances, with 30 of them coming in a starting role, so he could become an option to make some spot starts for the Halos eventually. Contreras has a career 4.83 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with weak 20.2% strikeout rate and a 10.1% walk rate. Fantasy managers can continue ignoring him.
The Pittsburgh Pirates activated right-hander Roansy Contreras from the paternity list on Sunday and optioned left-hander Jose Hernandez to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Contreras was placed on the league's paternity list on Opening Day on Thursday but will now rejoin the club to make his MLB debut the next time he appears in a game. Hernandez surprisingly picked up his first career save on Thursday against the Marlins when regular closer David Bednar (lat) was unavailable for the save opportunity. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues that picked up Hernandez after the Opening Day save can now safely dump him for another reliever. Contreras went 3-7 last year for Pittsburgh with a career-worst 6.59 ERA, a 1.57 WHIP, his first career save, 32 walks and 55 strikeouts in 19 outings (11 starts).
