New York Mets right-hander Reed Garrett (elbow) allowed three earned runs in just one-third of an inning for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday, but manager Carlos Mendoza said he came through the outing feeling physically strong. Garrett returned to New York on Monday to check in with the team's medical staff and will be sent back out for another minor-league rehab outing at an affiliate to be determined later this week. The 31-year-old has been out since the middle of July with right-elbow inflammation but is back to pitching in games and could return from the 15-day injured list sooner than later. Before his injury, Garrett was 7-3 with a 3.64 ERA (3.74 FIP), a 1.43 WHIP, his first four career saves, a career-high 63 strikeouts and 22 walks in 42 innings out of the Mets' bullpen. He could be a key relief arm for New York once he returns as the Mets look to secure a wild-card spot in the National League.
New York Mets relief pitcher Reed Garrett picked up his fourth save of the season in Monday's 9-7 extra-innings win over the Nationals. Garrett came in to pitch the bottom of the 10th inning up by three with two outs and runners on first and second. He allowed an RBI single but ended the game with a strikeout. The 31-year-old has seen seven save opportunities this season and has pitched well with seven wins and seven holds to go with a 3.20 ERA, a 13.50 K/9 rate, and a 4.35 BB/9 rate in 39 1/3 innings of work. He has filled in as interim closer throughout the season while Edwin Diaz has been either hurt or suspended. Diaz will resume closing duties when he returns, Garrett still seems like a worthwhile roto option given his high-leverage usage and his high strikeout rate.
New York Mets reliever Reed Garrett collected his third save of the season on Thursday, tossing a clean ninth inning in a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Garrett allowed a walk but got through the inning fairly easily otherwise. With Edwin Diaz being placed on the IL and struggling mightily before that, Garrett should be in line for save opportunities for at least a little while. Unfortunately, Garrett has had his own performance issues recently, allowing seven runs (six earned) in his last 2 IP before tonight. That said, it is a good sign that the team is still confident enough in the 31-year-old breakout to give him the opportunity to save this one. He is still a solid add in any leagues where saves matter in the hopes he can bounce back to his early-season self.
New York Mets reliever Reed Garrett closed out the Miami Marlins on Sunday, pitching the final two frames of a 7-3 victory. Garrett came in with a one-run lead, but the Mets scored three in the top of the ninth to give him a bigger cushion. The breakout reliever allowed just one hit while striking out four for his second save of the season. With Edwin Diaz being temporarily removed from the closer's role, Garrett should see a big uptick in save opportunities and should become the team's highest-leverage reliever. While that doesn't necessarily mean he will be the outright closer, he should still be added in most fantasy leagues at this time.
