New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (back) threw a bullpen session on Sunday. The Yankees are now deciding whether Gil will throw a live batting practice session or appear in a minor-league rehab game. Manager Aaron Boone said it's possible it could be a minimum stay on the 15-day injured list for Gil. The 26-year-old is recovering from a strained lower back and could rejoin the Yankees' pitching staff when he's first eligible on Sept. 6. Because the injury isn't considered all that serious, the Yankees plan on keeping Gil in the starting rotation to close out the year when he returns from his IL stint. The Dominican hurler has been relevant in all fantasy leagues in his first full MLB season and is currently sporting a 12-6 record, 3.39 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 144 strikeouts in 124 2/3 innings over 24 starts. Gil hadn't thrown more than 29 1/3 frames in the big leagues before 2024, though, so fantasy managers have to be concerned he's tiring down the stretch.
The New York Yankees placed right-hander Luis Gil (back) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a lower-back strain and recalled right-handed pitching prospect Will Warren from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move. The move comes after Gil had to leave his start early on Tuesday against the Cleveland Guardians with a back ailment. The 26-year-old could be running out of steam after missing most of the last two seasons due to Tommy John surgery. However, he has been excellent for most of 2024 for fantasy managers, going 12-6 with a 3.39 ERA (3.86 FIP), a 1.19 WHIP and a 144:66 K:BB in 124 2/3 innings over his 24 starts. Gil, who leads the league in walks, won't be eligible to return from the IL until Sept. 5, and the Yankees may elect not to rush him back so that they can have him fully healthy for a potential playoff run. Warren figures to replace Gil in the Yankees' rotation.UPDATE: The Yankees think Gil's back strain is minor. They hope he can continue throwing while on the IL, and manager Aaron Boone sees him returning as a starter.
New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil (back) left due to lower-back tightness in Tuesday night's game against the visiting Cleveland Guardians in the Bronx. Gil exited Tuesday's contest against Cleveland in the fourth inning with an apparent injury, and fantasy managers now have clarity on the issue. He's tentatively lined up to take the ball in a mouthwatering matchup in Sunday's series finale at home against the Colorado Rockies, but Gil will likely see how he feels up until then before the Yankees confirm his status for that one. Following Tuesday's effort, the 26-year-old right-hander holds a 3.39 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 144:66 K:BB across 124 2/3 frames (24 starts) for New York.
New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil went six innings in Saturday's 6-1 victory over the Orioles, allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out seven on his way to earning his 10th win of the season. Gil has now pitched back-to-back quality starts after hitting a three-game rough patch, including one outing against these same Orioles in which the righty allowed seven earned runs and was chased after just after an inning-and-a-third. The 26-year-old is having a strong season overall, going 10-5 with a 3.17 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and a 16.5% K-BB%. His next start could come against the Rays after the All-Star break.
New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil had a nice bounce back start on Sunday, tossing 6 innings of one-run ball in a tough-luck 3-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Gil allowed just four hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out nine. Unfortunately, one of the hits was a Rafael Devers home run in the seventh inning that ended up being the game-winning run. Still, this was a very encouraging start for Gil, who didn't walk a batter for the first time this season and appeared to get back on track after three rough outings. Fantasy managers should be encouraged, but should also be looking to see if they can sell high on the young righty, especially considering the likely scenario of his innings being limited soon.
