New York Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said the hope is that right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga (elbow) will be ready to pitch for the team in late April or early May. Loaisiga avoided Tommy John surgery and instead had a UCL repair of his right elbow in April of this year. The 30-year-old veteran still has some rehab to do, but as long as he doesn't suffer a setback, his 2025 debut won't be delayed for too long. Despite not being fully healthy, the Yankees re-signed the Nicaraguan hurler. Loaisiga made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Yankees and has a 3.44 career ERA (3.59 FIP), a 1.23 WHIP, seven saves and a 207:72 K:BB in 219 2/3 innings over 163 appearances (11 starts). Because of his injury, Loaisiga is most likely to be a bullpen option for the Yankees when he returns, giving him little fantasy appeal.
According to Jorge Castillo of ESPN, the New York Yankees have signed relief pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga to a one-year contract. This deal includes a team option in 2026. The 30-year-old was only able to log four innings of relief before suffering a torn UCL, which cut his season short. The right-hander held a modest 3.06 ERA and 4.17 ERA during 2023 and 2022, which was a stark drop compared to the stellar 2.17 ERA he posted during his 2021 breakout campaign. During this season, Loaisiga held a strong 1.02 WHIP with a 16:69 BB:K ratio across 70 2/3 innings of work. While he has battled the injury bug over the past few seasons he could be worth a look in deeper formats that score holds as he will likely operate as a high-leverage relief option during the 2025 campaign. However, given his recovery window, he may not be ready in time for Spring Training.
New York Yankees relief pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga is set to have season-ending surgery on his UCL due to a forearm strain. The right-handed pitcher was placed on the 60-day injured list yesterday, and this recent news confirms that he will not pitch again this season. The 29-year-old was also battling shoulder injuries most of last season, which resulted in him only totaling 21 innings over the past two years. Loaisiga was an intriguing pitcher in leagues that value holds, as he was poised to be used as a rotating setup man for closer Clay Holmes. Ian Hamilton should be viewed as the primary eighth-inning option for the Yankees going forward.
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga (forearm) has a "significant forearm strain" after undergoing an MRI exam on Thursday night. Loaisiga is meeting with doctors on Friday to determine the next steps, but he has been moved to the 60-day injured list after feeling something in his elbow near the end of his last outing on Wednesday. "It is concerning," Boone said. The Yankees are officially calling it a right flexor strain for the 29-year-old. It's bad news for a pitcher with a history of elbow issues, and surgery is likely on the table. If Loaisiga has to go under the knife, there's a good chance we won't see him again in 2024. In three relief appearances before his injury this year, Loaisiga had tossed four scoreless innings with a win, a blown save, one walk and three strikeouts.
The New York Yankees are considering making right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga a multi-inning reliever this year. Of his 160 appearances for the Yankees in his six years in the big leagues, only 11 have been starts. He hasn't started a game since the shortened 2020 campaign. It could be asking a lot of the 29-year-old to help replace Michael King, who was sent to the Padres in the blockbuster deal for Juan Soto. Elbow issues limited Loaisiga to just 17 relief outings in 2023, in which he allowed only seven runs (six earned) while walking one and striking out six in 17 2/3 frames. He's only thrown more than 48 innings in one season (2021) and has struck out just 204 hitters in 215 2/3 career innings. Loaisiga isn't lining up to be fantasy relevant in many leagues in 2024.
