The Chicago Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Cody Poteet from the New York Yankees on Tuesday in exchange for outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger and cash, according to sources. Poteet only appeared in five regular-season games (four starts) for the Yankees in 2024 and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 18 hits (two home runs) while walking eight and striking out 16 in 24 1/3 innings pitched. He made his debut in 2021 with the Miami Marlins and has a 3.80 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with a 20.2% strikeout rate and 10.2% walk rate in 83 innings over three major-league seasons. Poteet won't be anywhere near the fantasy radar next year but will give the Cubs some pitching insurance as both a starter and reliever. He will most likely start the 2025 campaign pitching for Triple-A Iowa.
New York Yankees pitcher Cody Poteet (triceps) has begun lightly throwing from the mound and is nearing his first bullpen session. Poteet hit the 15-day injured list on June 18 with a right triceps strain and was shut down from throwing through the rest of June before being re-evaluated. The 29-year-old made four starts this season and performed well with a 2.14 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and a 7:13 BB:K ratio across 21 innings. He limited hard contact quite well with a 6.6% barrel rate. The UCLA product will likely shift to a bullpen role once he is cleared to return but may be called upon during the stretch run to make a handful of spot starts. He might have streaming appeal but should be left on all waiver wires for the time being.
New York Yankees right-hander Cody Poteet (finger) will make the start on Saturday against the San Francisco Giants after the Yankees placed right-hander Clarke Schmidt (lat) on the 15-day injured list on Thursday. Poteet had been dealing with a blister on his finger at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but manager Aaron Boone said he's good to go for this weekend. The 29-year-old had a quality start and a win in his lone start in the big leagues for the Yankees this year, allowing one earned run while walking none and striking out four in six innings against the Cleveland Guardians on April 13. At Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he's gone 3-0 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with a 38:11 K:BB in 33 1/3 innings over seven starts. Poteet should be sufficiently stretched out and will only be worth a look as a fantasy streamer in much deeper leagues.
The New York Yankees agreed to an undisclosed major-league deal with free-agent right-hander Cody Poteet on Thursday. Poteet pitched for the Miami Marlins in 2021-22 and had a 4.45 ERA in 19 appearances (nine starts). He had Tommy John surgery in August of 2022, signed with the Kansas City Royals on a minor-league deal and only pitched in one game in the minors in late September of 2023. The 29-year-old will become depth for the Yankees' starting rotation and bullpen heading into spring training in 2024. In his 19 appearances for the Fish, Poteet also posted a 1.28 WHIP, 27 walks and 53 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings pitched. Poteet won't be anywhere near the fantasy radar for spring drafts.
