Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker completed 12 of 15 passes for 150 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. The 26-year-old also rushed five times for 11 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown. Hooker did lose a costly fumble late in the game but otherwise looked calm throughout his time on the field. As of now, Hooker's performance and higher ceiling give him the edge for the backup quarterback position over Nate Sudfeld, though both players had poor performances in their first preseason games last week. Hooker remains a dynasty stash for now and will look to improve on Saturday's performance in the preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell believes quarterback Hendon Hooker (concussion) is trending toward playing in the team's second preseason game against Kansas City on Saturday. The reserve quarterback suffered a concussion during Detroit's preseason opener against the Giants. Last week was the preseason debut for Hooker, who missed all of his rookie campaign recovering from a torn ACL. The 2023 third-round pick is competing with veteran Nate Sudfeld for the second-string job behind Jared Goff.
Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker (head) is in concussion protocol, and head coach Dan Campbell said the 26-year-old is unlikely to return to practice until at least Friday. Hooker, a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Tennessee, played in his first preseason game on Thursday after missing his entire rookie campaign following a torn ACL in his final collegiate season. He completed five of his nine passing attempts for 36 yards and led the team with 34 rushing yards before getting banged up against the New York Giants. While he should have plenty of time to be ready for Week 1, missing practice time as he tries to beat out Nate Sudfeld for the QB2 role behind Jared Goff is far from ideal. The team signed veteran quarterback Jake Fromm on Monday, which could be a sign that Hooker won't play this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker (head) completed five of nine passes for 36 yards during Thursday's preseason opener against the New York Giants. He was also productive on the ground, rushing four times for a team-leading 34 yards on the ground. Nearly half of his yardage came on a 16-yard run, which was the Lions' biggest gain on the ground in their loss to New York. On a more negative note, Hooker departed the game in the second half and has since entered concussion protocol. It remains to be seen if he'll miss additional time and whether an extended absence could spoil his chance of winning the backup quarterback job over Nate Sudfeld.
Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker (undisclosed) was removed from Thursday night's game against the New York Giants to be evaluated in the locker room. Hooker scrambled on a play-action boot and truck-sticked a Giants defender for an impressive 16-yard gain. The drive would stall, though, after his pass was later batted down at the line of scrimmage. After the possession, the second-year quarterback was getting looked at in the medical tent, and he then made his way to the locker room. There have been no further updates from the team, though it is possible he was getting checked for a concussion. He completed five of nine pass attempts for 36 yards and rushed for 34 yards on four attempts in Thursday's win. Hooker is listed as the third-string quarterback on the Lions unofficial depth chart behind Nate Sudfeld and Jared Goff.
