Toronto Blue Jays first basemanVladimir Guerrero Jr.smacked a two-run homer Thursday night, going 2-for-5 with an additional run scored in a 9-1 win against the Detroit Tigers. Despite the power outage, Guerrero Jr. has turned it around from a batting average perspective in May. The slugger has produced a .371 batting average in May after batting a horrific .219 in April. Overall, the 25-year-old has been disappointed in fantasy baseball and regular baseball as he's only on pace for 20 home runs, which would be his lowest total since clubbing 15 home runs during his rookie season. If it wasn't for his name and potential, you can argue that he would be on the waiver wire in most leagues after his abysmal April. Hopefully, the first baseman's hot hitting will start, leading to more balls going over the fence moving forward.
One American League executive thinks it's possible that the Toronto Blue Jays could move one or both of shortstop Bo Bichette and first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. this summer given the team's 21-25 start and the competitive state of the AL East. "I don't think they're opposed to it," the executive said. "They've talked to teams about it. The asks were ridiculous, but I think they're going to try to retool a lot, and using those guys to get pieces may be the way to do it." Both players are scheduled to reach free agency after the 2025 season, so any acquiring team would have them for the rest of this year and another full season. Bichette, a two-time All-Star, has had a sluggish start with a .230 average, only two homers and 16 RBI in 43 games. Guerrero is hitting .286 but with only four homers and 21 RBI in 45 games.
Saturday was only one game, but long-suffering Toronto Blue Jays first basemanVladimir Guerrero Jr.managers received welcomed news in the form of a 4-for-5, three-RBI performance in the team's 10-8 win over the Minnesota Twins. Guerrero tied the score at 8-8 with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to give him 19 RBI this season. However, all four of his hits were singles, and while his .272 batting average is acceptable, Guerrero's .391 slugging percentage continues to be a source of discontent. He has just one home run since April 12 and only 10 extra-base hits. Overall, Guerrero is slashing .272/.360/.391 with four home runs, 19 RBI, 14 runs, and a stolen base over 39 games in 2024.
Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. accounted for all of the team's offense in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the visiting Seattle Mariners, crushing his third home run of the season. Guerrero tied the game at one run apiece with a towering 465-foot shot off Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert during the seventh inning. It doesn't look like Guerrero is going to recapture his 2021 Silver Slugger form, but he remains one of the most dependable assets one can find in fantasy baseball. While the 25-year-old three-time All-Star had a great spring, he's off to a sluggish start while hitting .200 (10-for-50) with a .742 OPS, three long balls, and five RBI across his first 13 regular-season outings. Guerrero looks to tee off on a Colorado Rockies pitching staff that ranks dead last in ERA (6.57), WHIP (1.78), and batting average against (.297) during a three-game weekend set starting on Friday.
Outfielder George Springer will retain his leadoff spot in the Toronto Blue Jays' batting order to open the 2024 regular season, but the team is leaning toward having first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit second, followed by shortstop Bo Bichette. "I really like the way (Guerrero) is swinging the bat," manager John Schneider said. "I think having him in between George and Bo is a good thing." Guerrero often hit third in 2023, a spot that will now be occupied by mostly Justin Turner. The 25-year-old slugger hit in the three-hole for 110 games in 2023, while batting second only twice. It's a move that probably won't have a drastic affect on Vlad Jr.'s overall numbers, although it could allow him to get more at-bats in the long run.
