Texas Rangers right-hander Tyler Mahle (elbow) looked good in his third minor-league rehab start on Monday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, going 2 2/3 scoreless innings with one hit allowed, one walk and five strikeouts. In his three rehab starts to date, Mahle has thrown 6 2/3 scoreless innings while walking only one and fanning eight. The results have been great, but the 29-year-old has yet to throw three full innings and still has a ways to go on the rehab trail as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery in May of last year. He will probably need at least two or three more starts in the minors before he becomes a realistic option to make his 2024 debut for the Rangers in the second half. Before injuring his right elbow in 2023, Mahle was looking solid for the Twins and will be worth a look in at least deep-mixed leagues as starting depth when he's nearing a return.
Texas Rangers right-hander Tyler Mahle (elbow) began a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday. Manager Bruce Bochy said it's expected that Mahle will throw around 35 to 40 pitches, depending on how stressful his first couple of innings are. Mahle had Tommy John surgery when he was with the Minnesota Twins last May, but the Rangers still signed him to a two-year, $22 million deal in the offseason. His injury ruined a promising 2023, as Mahle had a 3.16 ERA with 28 strikeouts over five starts with the Twins. Mahle was officially moved to the 60-day injured list at the start of the regular season. Barring any setbacks, the 29-year-old could make his Rangers debut at some point in August and will be worth a look as a deep-league streamer in the right matchups.
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Tyler Mahle (elbow) threw 20 pitches off the mound on Wednesday. Mahle, 29, underwent Tommy John surgery last season as a member of the Minnesota Twins before signing with the Rangers this offseason. Mahle still has a long way to go, but it Wednesday was a big step forward for the right-hander in what should be a lengthy recovery. Mahle doesn't have a clear timetable for his eventual return, but he is unlikely to help managers much this season and should be a name for managers to remind themselves of in 2025 drafts.
Texas Rangers right-hander Tyler Mahle (elbow) is scheduled to face live hitters on Monday. He started throwing in mid-January after undergoing Tommy John surgery when he was with the Minnesota Twins last May. Mahle signed a two-year, $22 million deal in the offseason with the Rangers. His injury in 2023 ended a promising season, as he had posted a 3.16 ERA with 28 strikeouts over five starts. Mahle was officially moved to the 60-day injured list at the start of the regular season. The 29-year-old has been throwing bullpen sessions for the last couple of weeks and is now ready to take the next step in his grueling rehab from Tommy John surgery. However, because of how long he's been out, Mahle still has a ways to go before he's a realistic option for Texas' starting rotation. Mahle isn't going to be on the fantasy radar until the second half of the season.
Both Texas Rangers right-handers Tyler Mahle (elbow) and Kumar Rocker (elbow) threw bullpen sessions off the game mound recently for a biomechanical evaluation. Both Mahle and Rocker had their Tommy John elbow surgeries on May 22 of last year. A year later, both Mahle and Rocker are beginning to throw off a mound again, but they both still have work to do before they are cleared to start facing live hitters in games. Neither Mahle nor Rocker are likely to return to game action until after the All-Star break in mid-July. The 29-year-old Mahle had a solid 3.16 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 28 K's and five walks in his five starts for the Twins last year before going down. Rocker, the club's No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline, will also be hoping to return to minor-league games in July, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to join the big-league club in 2024.
