St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has been flat-out awful to start the month of May. The veteran slugger entered Sunday's game 1-for-32 with 14 strikeouts. Luckily, was able to do some damage against the Milwaukee Brewers. Goldschmidt went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in the victory. This will raise his slash line to .197/.280/.279 on the season. This situation is obviously frustrating for fantasy managers, but maybe this is a sign of more good things to come.

Goldschmidt was scheduled to sit out Wednesday's series finale against the New York Mets on Wednesday before the game was rained out, so the Cardinals have just elected to give the struggling Goldy another day off. Alec Burleson will once again start at first base and hit cleanup against Brewers right-hander Tobias Myers. The 36-year-old right-handed slugger hasn't recorded a hit in his last six games to drop his season slash line to .195/.287/.263 with only two home runs and 11 RBI in 133 at-bats. Burleson has never faced Myers in his career but will be a tempting DFS play out of the cleanup spot as the Cardinals look to get their offense going. Goldy should be back in action on Friday in Milwaukee as he looks to break out of his season-long slump.

Alec Burleson will get the start at first base and will hit fifth against Mets left-hander Jose Quintana. Goldschmidt is hitting .545 with a 1.651 OPS, three home runs and 11 RBI in 22 career at-bats against Quintana in his career, but the slugging 36-year-old right-hander has also gone hitless so far in the month of May and could use a day off to clear his head. Goldy, like many of St. Louis' hitters, has been ice-cold to start the year and is currently slashing just .195/.287/.263 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 133 at-bats. Burleson went 3-for-5 with a home run on Tuesday but is also hitting just .188 (3-for-16) with a homer and four RBI against lefties this year.

Alec Burleson is playing first base and batting sixth, while Brandon Crawford is at the 6 and is hitting seventh against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola. The 36-year-old Goldschmidt could use the break after putting up a weak .544 OPS to begin the 2024 season. Meanwhile, Winn has been consistent so far in his first full season as the Cardinals' starting shortstop, going 11-for-33 (.333) with a double, triple, three RBI and a stolen base in 11 games. Neither Burleson nor Crawford will be very strong DFS plays against Nola. Burleson is hitting .167 with an RBI in six at-bats against Nola, while Crawford is hitting .200 with three RBI in 15 career at-bats.

The veteran has been scuffling this spring, hitting just .148 (4-for-27) including 11 strikeouts (33.3%) and just one home run. You don't want to put too much stock in spring stats, but the 36-year-old is coming off of a season that was a continuation of some troubling trends, seeing his Contact% tick down while his Whiff% ticked up for a third consecutive season. Hopefully the 7x All-Star can pick up the pace, as he'll also be in talks with the Cardinals at some point about a contract extension as the former MVP will be a free agent at the end of the season.
