Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (hand) is back in the starting lineup on Monday to take on right-hander Bowden Francis and the Toronto Blue Jays. The veteran missed Sunday's series finale against the New York Yankees with hand soreness after being plunked on the hand by a pitch on Saturday. It was a rough first series at the plate for the 37-year-old, as Abreu went hitless with one walk and three strikeouts across 13 plate appearances against the Yankees. It's a disappointing start after Abreu endured the worst season of his career at the plate in 2023, hitting just .237 with 18 home runs, albeit with 90 RBI, across 141 appearances in his first season with the Astros. His fantasy stock has plummeted, and age could be rearing its ugly head for the former White Sox star.
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (hand) is out of the starting lineup on Sunday against the visiting New York Yankees after he was hit by a pitch on his hand on Saturday, according to manager Joe Espada. The skipper said that Abreu should be available off the bench on Sunday in the series finale. With Abreu down, Jon Singleton will get the start at first base and will bat sixth for the Astros against right-hander Clarke Schmidt. Abreu's injury doesn't sound all that serious, so consider him day-to-day for now. Fantasy managers will want to check back on Monday to see if he's back in the lineup for the series opener at home against the Toronto Blue Jays. Through the first couple of games in 2024, the 37-year-old slugger is hitless in 12 plate appearances, so perhaps the day off on Easter will do him some good.
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (knee) is scheduled to do a full workout in camp on Friday and Saturday, with the goal of serving as the designated hitter in a Grapefruit League game on Sunday versus the Philadelphia Phillies. Abreu has been dealing with some minor knee soreness in camp in the last week, but the 37-year-old is fine and should return to game action soon. Given his age, Abreu is expected to see more of his at-bats at DH for the Astros in 2024 in order to keep him off his feet as much as possible. After a dreadful start to the season for Houston in the first half of last season, the Cuban slugger rebounded to hit .237/.296/.383 with 18 home runs and 90 RBI in 540 regular-season at-bats. Abreu isn't the hitter he once was with the Chicago White Sox, but he can deliver moderate power as a corner infield option in mixed fantasy leagues with plenty of RBI chances.
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (knee) is scheduled to hit and take groundballs in camp on Tuesday and could return to Grapefruit League games by Wednesday or Thursday, according to manager Joe Espada. The Astros have held Abreu out of games the last couple of days while he deals with right-knee soreness. It's nothing serious, though, and the 37-year-old right-handed slugger should be just fine for Opening Day on March 28. So far in spring training games, he's gone 4-for-14 in six contests for the Astros. Abreu came on strong in the second half last year after a really bad start in his first year in Houston. He's no longer in his prime, though, so fantasy managers might not be able to expect much from Abreu other than solid RBI numbers while hitting in the heart of a strong Astros lineup.
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (knee) is dealing with right knee soreness from his sliding attempt on a foul ball during Thursday's spring training win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter. Manager Joe Espada said Abreu will rest for a few days but that there are "no concerns." This issue sounds to be minor, so Abreu should be back in Houston's lineup in short order. The 37-year-old 2020 American League MVP looked to be a shell of himself during most of the first season of a three-year deal with the Astros, but in his final 26 games of the campaign, Abreu managed to hit .237 with an .835 OPS, seven home runs, six doubles, and 28 RBI over his closing 97 at-bats. After also batting .295 with a .945 OPS in 44 postseason ABs, the late-season surge gives the veteran slugger some late-round life in 2024 fantasy drafts.
