St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that the Opening Day center field job is still open and he is not ready to name a starter in that spot yet. With Tommy Edman (wrist) set to open the season on the injured list after having surgery on his right wrist in the offseason, Dylan Carlson, Victor Scott II and Michael Siani are competing for the job. Carlson is getting the start in center field in the team's Grapefruit League game on Saturday and is the most likely candidate to see most of the playing time in center until Edman returns. The 25-year-old year-old Carlson also had offseason surgery on his ankle in September, but he's good to go and is gaining steam in deep-mixed leagues with Edman injured. Scott, 23, has plenty of speed to spare and has really impressed in spring training. Siani, 24, would be the long shot, but he could make the Opening Day roster out of camp as a fourth or fifth outfielder.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carlson (ankle), who had season-ending left-ankle surgery last year, is expected to run the bases on Wednesday in addition to hitting in live batting practice and taking fly balls. Manager Oliver Marmol described Carlson's base-running as "checking the final box." The 25-year-old left-handed hitter probably won't play right away when the Grapefruit League scheduled kicks off this weekend, but barring a setback this spring, he should be ready to go for Opening Day at the end of March. A former top prospect, Carlson has hit just .230/.316/.364 in the last two seasons and now enters the 2024 campaign as the team's fourth outfielder. He should bounce back this year with better health, but playing time isn't going to be easy to come by.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carlson (ankle) is limited with his running in spring training. It doesn't come as a big surprise, even though he was cleared to do running in December, as Carlson had left-ankle surgery in September. The Cardinals play to ease the 25-year-old switch hitter in at camp, although he's expected to be ready by Opening Day. Carlson's fantasy stock is down considerably after a tough 2023 season that saw him hit only .219/.318/.333 with five home runs, eight doubles, a triple, 27 RBI, three stolen bases and 27 runs scored in 76 games played. The former top prospect figures to bounce back in 2024 with better healthy, but he'll have to earn regular playing time in St. Louis' outfield. Because he's currently projected as the club's fourth outfielder, Carlson is outside of RotoBaller's top-100 outfield ranks.
