Chris Murphy Undergoes Tommy John Surgery

Boston Red Sox reliever Chris Murphy (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. The procedure was performed by renowned elbow expert Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas. Murphy's 2024 season comes to a conclusion before it began after he appeared in 20 games with the Red Sox in his MLB debut last season. The 25-year-old worked to a 4.91 ERA in that time, but his 3.70 FIP, 3.88 SIERA, and rock-solid 15.1% K-BB% all indicate he was far better than his surface ERA suggests. However, he did struggle to a 6.32 ERA across 15 outings (nine starts) with Triple-A Worcester as well. Murphy is likely to miss a good chunk of the 2025 campaign given the timing of the surgery.

Season-Ending Surgery Expected For Chris Murphy

Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Murphy (elbow) is going for a second opinion to confirm his initial diagnosis of a high-grade UCL tear in his left elbow, and season-ending surgery is expected. We don't know yet if Murphy will actually have Tommy John surgery, but either way, his 2024 season is likely over before it even started. The 25-year-old southpaw reliever made his major-league debut for the Red Sox in 2023 and went 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA (3.70 FIP), his first career save, a 1.41 WHIP, 17 walks and 49 strikeouts in 47 2/3 relief innings over 20 appearances out of the bullpen. Murphy was much more effective as a multi-inning reliever in Boston than he was as a starter for Triple-A Worcester in 2023, as he had an ERA over 8.00 with 25 walks in 36 2/3 innings.

Chris Murphy Has "Damage" In His Elbow

Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Murphy's (elbow) MRI exam showed ligament "damage" in his elbow, according to manager Alex Cora. It's not good, obviously, and means the 25-year-old southpaw won't be on the team's Opening Day roster out of camp. A decision on whether he'll need surgery on his elbow will come in the next few days. Murphy had been competing for a spot in Boston's bullpen as a left-handed arm. If he's forced to go under the knife, it could put an end to his entire 2024 season before it even starts. Murphy was taken in the sixth round of 2019 out of San Diego and made his big-league debut in Boston last year, recording a 4.91 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, his first career save, 17 walks and 49 strikeouts in 47 2/3 relief innings.
