Liam Hendriks Throws First Bullpen Session

Boston Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks (elbow) estimated he threw around 15 pitches off a mound (all fastballs) in his first bullpen session on Wednesday since having Tommy John surgery last August. Hendriks thinks he can return in August, although he notes that he's the one who has come up with that timetable and not the Red Sox. The 35-year-old will remain on the 60-day injured list for at least another month, but the veteran right-hander is making progress after having elbow reconstruction last year. The three-time All-Star recovered from cancer in 2023 with the White Sox before needing elbow surgery, so he's had a pretty eventful last year. The Australian hurler has 116 career saves in 13 big-league seasons, but the Red Sox are likely to ease him in later in the second half of the season. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect much.

Liam Hendriks To Throw This Week

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Liam Hendriks (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this week. The 35-year-old will throw his first session since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August. It sounds like Hendriks is making progress, but still isn't expected to contribute to the Red Sox bullpen this season. This is a step forward in what is going to be a lengthy rehab process for Hendriks.

Liam Hendriks Progressing

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Liam Hendriks (elbow) was able to throw fastballs and breaking pitches off the front of a mound on Thursday as he progresses in his throwing program after having Tommy John surgery. The 35-year-old Australian reliever overcame a cancer diagnosis to return to the Chicago White Sox in 2023, but he only ended up appearing in five games before undergoing elbow surgery. The three-time All-Star has 116 career saves in the big leagues over 13 seasons, so he'll bring veteran experience to the back end of Boston's bullpen when he's eventually cleared, but there's no current timetable for his return, and he's unlikely to join the team until the second half of the season. For now, Hendriks can be left to the waiver wire in most fantasy leagues, and there's no guarantee he'll be a candidate for saves in Boston as long as Kenley Jansen remains healthy.
