Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen said on Friday that kicker Matt Gay (hernia) will kick in the team's Week 2 contest on the road against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday. Gay underwent surgery for a sports hernia recently and was forced to sit out the Week 1 loss to the division-rival Houston Texans. Rookie Spencer Shrader made his NFL debut in that one and made all three of his extra-point attempts. The 30-year-old Gay has recovered quickly, though, practicing in full all week, and he will end up missing just one game to start the 2024 season. He made 80.5% of his 41 field-goal attempts in 2023 with the Colts and went 35-for-36 on extra points in 17 games. Gay isn't a terrible streaming option for fantasy managers, but it makes some sense to look for better options than relying on a kicker coming off a recent surgery.
Indianapolis Colts kicker Matt Gay (hernia) was a full participant in practice on Thursday. He has now been listed as "full" for two consecutive days, suggesting he's back to 100 percent following a Week 1 absence. Barring any sort of setback, Gay should be able to operate as the Colts' primary kicker on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. With Indianapolis currently favored to win, there should be plenty of scoring opportunities for Gay. He's a low-end starter in most fantasy leagues this week.
Indianapolis Colts kicker Matt Gay (hernia) is "good to go," head coach Shane Steichen said on Wednesday. It's unclear what Gay's practice status is to begin the week, but apparently he will be ready to make his 2024 debut this Sunday at Lambeau Field in Week 2 against the Green Bay Packers. Gay recently had surgery to fix a sports hernia and was unable to suit up in the Week 1 loss to the division-rival Houston Texans. With Gay out last weekend, rookie Spencer Shrader made his NFL debut and made all three of his extra-point attempts. The 25-year-old didn't attempt a single field goal. The 30-year-old Gay will be Indy's primary kicker in 2024 when healthy after making 80.5% of his 41 field-goal attempts in 17 games for the Colts a year ago. It's nice that Gay only had to miss one game, but fantasy managers should have better options at the position in Week 2.
Indianapolis Colts kicker Matt Gay (hernia) is officially inactive for Week 1 of the regular season on Sunday against the division-rival Houston Texans. Gay recently underwent surgery for a sports hernia and wasn't able to practice this week, although the Colts listed him as questionable on the Week 1 final injury report on Friday. The 30-year-old veteran booter was trending toward not playing all week, though, and the final indication that he wouldn't play this weekend was when the Colts elevated rookie kicker Spencer Shrader to the active 53-man roster on Saturday. It's unclear if Gay will be ready to kick in Week 2 at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers, but fantasy managers need to look for another option in Week 1. We'd suggest ignoring Shrader in his NFL debut and look for other more reliable kicking options to replace Gay.
Indianapolis Colts kicker Matt Gay (hernia) is officially questionable for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans. Although he was officially listed as a non-participant in practice all three days this week, head coach Shane Steichen did note that Gay has been doing some kicking. Therefore, with the questionable tag, Indianapolis is leaving the door open for him to play. In the event that he can't suit up, the Colts could choose to elevate Spencer Shrader from the practice squad. Shrader was 4-for-4 on field goals and 2-for-2 on extra points during the preseason. Gay would rank as a low-end K1 option if he does play in the season opener.
