The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Tuesday that right-handed pitching prospect River Ryan (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery. It was already announced that Ryan would miss the rest of the 2024 season, but now he'll miss most, if not all, of next year as well. It's a tough blow for the Dodgers and for Ryan, who was ranked by MLB Pipeline as LA's No. 3 prospect. The 25-year-old former 11th-round pick of the San Diego Padres in 2021 out of University of North Carolina at Pembroke made his major-league debut this year and looked great, going 1-0 with a 1.33 ERA (3.38 FIP), a 1.18 WHIP and an 18:9 K:BB in his four starts (20 1/3 innings). It remains to be seen if he'll have an internal-brace procedure, but either way, Ryan will be off the redraft fantasy radar in 2025.
Los Angeles Dodgers rookie starting pitcher River Ryan (forearm, elbow) is officially done for the season, according to Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts. Ryan was lifted from his start on Saturday evening due to forearm tightness and was scheduled to hit the 15-day injured list on Sunday. However, the top prospect will now be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Roberts expressed that the team is still figuring out the next course of action. This is tough news for the 25-year-old, as he performed quite well through his first 20 major-league innings, holding a 1.33 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 9:18 BB:K. Landon Knack will be a favorite to rejoin the starting rotation and is worth a look in all standard fantasy leagues.
Los Angeles Dodgers rookie starting pitcher River Ryan (forearm) will be placed on the injured list, according to Eric Stephen of SBNation.com. The extent of his injury is still not known, but the rookie will undergo an MRI later on Sunday. Ryan was removed early from his start on Saturday evening against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to forearm tightness. Prior to the injury, the right-hander looked quite comfortable through his first four major-league starts, holding a strong 1.33 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 9:18 BB:K. If Ryan were to miss an extended period of time, Landon Knack would likely slot into the Dodgers' starting rotation.
Los Angeles Dodgers rookie starting pitcher River Ryan left the game Saturday night in the fifth inning with an apparent injury against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Manager Dave Roberts and the team trainer came out to the mound after Ryan threw a wide slider and appeared to be in discomfort. Ryan was immediately removed from the game but left under his power. It is hoped that details will become available after the game. Ryan is 1-0 with a 133 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and 22 strikeouts in 16 innings for the Dodgers this season.
