Tennessee Titans tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo caught both his targets for 15 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Chicago. Quarterback Will Levis could not get the passing game going most of the game, which led to down weeks for all Titans' pass catchers. Okonkwo was able to bail out fantasy managers with his touchdown grab, an incredibly impressive catch in the back right corner of the end zone over a defender. It was a tough day for the position overall, as Oknkwo finished as TE6 on the week heading into the Monday night game with only 9.5 PPR points. While he had a fine fantasy day because of the score, playing Okonkwo on a weekly basis is still not recommended if this passing attack can't improve considerably from Week 1. Okonkwo and the Titans offense will have their work cut out for them when the Jets travel to Nashville next week.
Tennessee Titans tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo takes on the Chicago Bears in an NFL opening weekend matchup. The former fourth-round pick was a popular breakout candidate last season, and while that didn't pan out due to the ineffectiveness of Ryan Tannehill at QB, Okonkwo was much more productive when Levis took over as the starting quarterback. There's some post-hype sleeper vibes around Okonkwo heading into year three, but he is still at best the fourth target in this offense behind Ridley, Hopkins, and Pollard/Spears at the moment. Okonkwo could jump up a spot in that pecking order if Hopkins is unable to go - currently questionable with an MCL tear - but it's still a risky play even if he gets a couple of extra targets this week. Chig is better left on fantasy benches in Week 1.
The Tennessee Titans listed an offense with a two-tight end set on their depth chart last year. This year, they listed one tight end in the starting lineup on the first unofficial depth chart of the preseason, and it's split between Chigoziem Okonkwo and Josh Whyle. Fantasy managers should never read too much into unofficial depth charts, especially this early in the preseason, but it's not a great sign for Okonkwo. Tennessee's offense is expected to be more pass-happy under new head coach Brian Callahan, but the 24-year-old Okonkwo will have plenty of competition for targets after the team added wideouts Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd in the offseason. The former fourth-round selection in 2022 out of Maryland caught 54 passes for 528 yards and only one touchdown in 17 games in 2023 in his second year in the league. For now, he's merely a low-end TE2 target in deeper fantasy leagues.
