Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada (groin) will start serving as the designated hitter in the Arizona Complex League on Tuesday, according to manager Pedro Grifol. If all goes well on his rehab assignment, Moncada could return to the White Sox by the end of July. The 29-year-old Cuban infielder has been on the shelf since early April after suffering a serious groin strain. The White Sox are going to give Moncada plenty of time to get himself up to speed in the minors before they consider activating him from the injured list in the second half of the season. But when he returns, he should take over regular duties at third base in Chicago. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues can take a wait-and-see approach on the oft-injured third baseman. Moncada has just one 20-homer season in eight big-league seasons and hadn't gone deep in 11 games in 2024 before getting hurt.
Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada (groin) is feeling better and is heading to extended spring training in Arizona to continue his full rehab process. Moncada landed on the 60-day injured list with a left-groin strain, so he's most likely not going to return for the White Sox or fantasy managers until after the All-Star break. It's getting hard to justify holding onto the oft-injured 28-year-old third baseman in mixed fantasy leagues, even though he started the year hitting .282 (11-for-39) with no home runs and no RBI in his first 11 games before getting hurt. Braden Shewmake got the start at the hot corner on Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals, but Gavin Sheets is also an option at the position when he's not serving as the designated hitter.
The Chicago White Sox placed third baseman Yoan Moncada (groin) on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with a left-groin strain, but he's expected to miss three to six months. Outfielder Oscar Colas was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move. Moncada could end up missing the rest of the season after getting hurt while running to first base in the second inning on Tuesday. It's a huge disappointment for Moncada and the White Sox, especially with outfielders Eloy Jimenez (groin) and Luis Robert Jr. (hip) also on the IL. Moncada had gone 11-for-39 (.282) with three doubles and four runs scored in 11 games this year. Both Lenyn Sosa and Braden Shewmake could see more playing time on the infield with the 28-year-old out for the foreseeable future. Sosa is starting at third base and hitting second against the Guardians on Wednesday.
Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada (groin) was removed early during Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians. White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Moncada has been dealing with a lingering issue since the start of the season. The expectation is that he'll join teammates Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert Jr. on the injured list. The White Sox are likely to have Moncada undergo further testing before making any moves.
Chicago White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said that third baseman Yoan Moncada (hip, groin) is dealing with a nagging hip/adductor injury for the last three to four days, but the skipper said he doesn't expect the injury to keep Moncada out of the lineup. "He's doing a really good job maintaining it," Grifol said. The White Sox can ill-afford anymore injuries to key players with Eloy Jimenez (groin) and Luis Robert Jr. (hip) already on the injured list. The 28-year-old Moncada has had his fair share of injuries over the years, too, but he remains in the lineup at third base while batting second on Tuesday against Cleveland Guardians left-hander Logan Allen. The Cuban switch-hitter is hitting .270 (10-for-37) in the early going, but he hasn't hit a home run or driven in a run yet in 10 contests.
