The San Francisco Giants placed right-hander Keaton Winn (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 21) on Saturday with right-elbow inflammation. Winn will head to the shelf after allowing five earned runs on five hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out two in just 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Rickwood Field in Alabama on Thursday. It's the second time that the 26-year-old has been on the injured list already this year, and it leaves the Giants' starting rotation dangerously thin. It's unclear who will replace Winn in the rotation as we head closer to the All-Star break next month. Winn hasn't even been much of an option in NL-only leagues in 2024, as he's gone 3-8 with a bloated 7.16 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 48 strikeouts and 20 walks in 55 1/3 innings over his 12 starts in his second year in the big leagues.

San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin said on Tuesday that right-hander Keaton Winn (forearm) is "getting close" and could be an option for the team the next turn through the starting rotation. Winn walked off the mound with team trainer Dave Groeschner after his velocity began to dip in the fifth inning in the loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 14. MRI results showed a mild strain of his right forearm. Winn was able to throw two bullpen sessions recently, most recently with 45 pitches on Monday. The 26-year-old could come off the 15-day injured list sooner than later, potentially avoiding a minor-league rehab assignment since his injury wasn't all that serious. If Winn avoids a rehab assignment, his next start could come in a plus matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks on next Monday or Tuesday. Winn was 3-6 with a bloated 6.17 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in nine starts before getting hurt.

Giants manager Bob Melvin told reporters earlier in the week that Winn was dealing with a mild strain and he'd likely be placed on the injured list. As a result, right-hander Mason Black has been recalled from Triple-A Sacramento. The hard-throwing righty has made two lackluster starts for the Giants this season. Black has all the tools to be a legitimate option at the big league level. He has a favorable matchup against the Colorado Rockies lineup, but remains a shaky streaming choice.
