Emmet Sheehan's Surgery Includes Internal Brace

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Emmet Sheehan (elbow) said that his Tommy John surgery last week also included an internal brace. Sheehan also said he suffered an oblique injury during spring training, in addition to the forearm irritation he dealt with. He mentioned an expected 13 months before his potential return, which essentially means he won't be an option for the Dodgers' starting rotation until around the All-Star break in 2025. The former sixth-round selection in 2021 out of Boston College won't return anytime soon after not being able to pitch at all in 2024. In his major-league debut last year, Sheehan went 4-1 with a 4.92 ERA (4.85 FIP) and 1.19 WHIP with 26 walks and 64 strikeouts in 60 1/3 innings over 13 outings (11 starts). There's obvious strikeout upside with Sheehan for fantasy managers in keeper/dynasty leagues, but home runs and walks were an issue last year.

Emmet Sheehan Undergoes Tommy John Surgery

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Emmet Sheehan (elbow) underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on his UCL on Wednesday. The procedure was performed successfully by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. Sheehan was cleared to face hitters in late March but then was shut down in the middle of April when he had a setback with his right elbow. The 24-year-old will now miss all of the 2024 season and probably will not be able to return for the Dodgers until around midseason in 2025. It's a big blow for one of the Dodgers' promising young arms after he made his big-league debut in 2023, going 4-1 with a 4.92 ERA (4.85 FIP) and 1.19 WHIP while walking 26 and striking out 64 in 60 1/3 innings over his 13 outings (11 starts). Sheehan can now be safely dropped by any fantasy managers in deeper redraft leagues that were hanging onto him in an IL spot.

Emmet Sheehan Progressing Well

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Emmet Sheehan (forearm) hasn't thrown off a mound yet, but he's progressing well and has been ramping up the intensity of his long-toss program. Sheehan has been throwing after being shut down in the middle of April due to a right-forearm injury that he suffered in mid-March in spring training. The 24-year-old will be eligible to return from the 60-day injured list on May 18, but that's probably not going to happen given the fact that he has yet to pitch all season to this point. But if Sheehan can avoid any setbacks from here on out, he should be able to rejoin the Dodgers' big-league roster before the All-Star break. He debuted in the majors in 2023 and went 4-1 with a 4.92 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 26 walks and 64 strikeouts in 60 1/3 innings over 13 appearances (11 starts).
