The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Friday that they have placed right-hander Alek Manoah (elbow) on the 15-day injured list with a right-elbow sprain. In other moves, the team acquired right-hander Ryan Burr from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for cash considerations and designated right-hander Joel Kuhnel for assignment. Manoah is reportedly going for a second opinion on his right elbow, according to sources, but the expectation at this point is that he's likely to miss an extended period of time. The 26-year-old is dealing with damage to his UCL, which is going to require significant rest and could eventually lead to surgery down the road. After a disastrous 2023 campaign in which he was demoted to the minors, Manoah has held his own in five starts in Toronto this year, going 1-2 with a 3.70 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 26 strikeouts and eight walks in 24 1/3 innings.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Alek Manoah (elbow) left Wednesday's game against the hosting Chicago White Sox due to right elbow discomfort in the second inning after striking out three over 1 2/3 scoreless innings of work. There was nothing obvious as to why Manoah needed to exit the contest at first, but there wasn't much discussion on the mound before he departed and Trevor Richards took over. Manoah should be deemed day-to-day ahead of his next projected start that lines up for Tuesday against the division-rival Baltimore Orioles, but there's a chance he may need to either miss a turn in the rotation or head to the injured list. It's not what you want to hear after the inconsistent 26-year-old right-hander didn't rejoin Toronto's rotation until early May due to soreness in his right shoulder, but he's got a solid 3.70 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 26:8 K:BB through 24 1/3 frames (five starts) this season.UPDATE: Manoah will get an MRI on his right elbow on Thursday, according to manager John Schneider.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Alek Manoah was outstanding during Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The right-hander struck over seven batters, allowing just one hit over seven scoreless innings of work. Fantasy managers should be well aware of Manoah's up-and-down career in the MLB. This was a strong outing but fantasy managers shouldn't jump onto the bandwagon yet.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah had his best start in a long time on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins. Manoah allowed three runs (none earned) across seven innings of work and only threw 78 pitches. He struck out six batters while issuing one walk. Manoah was cruising through the start, but an error by Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement in the seventh inning turned into a three-run home run from Carlos Santana three batters later. It was nice to see Manoah hold his own against a strong lineup after he gave up seven runs in his first start of the season. He is by no means a must-roster player, but there is some more streaming intrigue surrounding him for his next projected start against the Tampa Bay Rays. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on Manoah and consider picking him up if he strings together some momentum on the mound.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Alek Manoah got rocked in his first start of the season against the Washington Nationals on Sunday. Manoah allowed seven runs (six earned) in just four innings, giving up six hits and walking four while striking out six. He showed glimpses of his former self, but overall it was a lackluster performance for the big righty. The Jays have already committed to Manoah for at least one more start, but he will have to be much better to instill confidence that they can keep rolling with him. Fantasy managers should not consider starting Manoah until he can consistently deliver good outings, and he can be dropped outside of the deepest of leagues.
