Max Meyer Struggling In Triple-A

Miami Marlins pitching prospect Max Meyer threw well in three starts at the big-league level to start the 2024 season. In 17 innings, he had a 2.12 ERA (3.71 FIP), 0.82 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts. Despite his success, Meyer was demoted to Triple-A Jacksonville after facing the Atlanta Braves on April 13. Since then, he hasn't been nearly as sharp, posting a 6.86 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 19.2 MiLB innings. One reason for his struggles is that he's given up 10 walks. He's also had some bad luck. Meyer currently has a .392 BABIP in Triple-A. The league-average BABIP is generally considered to be .300, so the rate at which he's surrendering hits on balls-in-play is almost certainly unsustainable. Thus, Meyer could have more success going forward. However, he'll likely need to improve his control before rejoining the Marlins' rotation.

Marlins Limiting Max Meyer's Workload

The Miami Marlins recently optioned No. 3 prospect Max Meyer to Triple-A Jacksonville despite the fact that he had been the team's most consistent starter three turns through the rotation to begin the year. But Meyer missed 19 months due to Tommy John surgery in August of 2022, so his workload in 2024 was always going to be monitored closely. The most innings he's thrown in his professional career was 111 three years ago. Manager Skip Schumaker said Meyer won't be shut down, but he'll pitch once a week in three-inning stints for Jacksonville so he can be available to the Fish in the second half of the season. "There's not an exact date or timeline," Schumaker said of Meyer's return. The 25-year-old has a bright future in the big leagues, but his ceiling is capped significantly for fantasy managers in 2024.

Max Meyer Optioned To Minors

Miami Marlins pitcher Max Meyer was optioned to the minors before the team's matchup against the San Francisco Giants on Monday. With A.J. Puk (illness) being scratched from his start earlier in the day, the Marlins decided to call up Edward Cabrera to take his spot. However, his promotion has resulted in Miami sending down Meyer -- who has been the team's best pitcher in the early going. The right-hander has given up just four earned runs across 17 innings pitched (2.12 ERA) through three starts. He is also coming off the best outing of his career, allowing only one earned run across six strong innings against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. However, with the 25-year-old coming off Tommy John surgery, it appears the team is taking a careful approach with their young pitcher. Despite his option to the minors, he is a player you should be looking to stash in fantasy, given his upside.
