Logan Webb Having A Rough Cactus League

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb has had a rough go of it in the Cactus League this spring with a bloated 10.97 ERA in six starts than span over 21 1/3 innings. Webb, 27, is coming off an excellent season for the Giants with his 3.25 ERA being his highest over the past three seasons. Most managers will not argue with that and should not. It is not out of the norm to see players struggle in Spring Training and then turn it on once the numbers actually count. Managers shouldn't worry about Webb as he has appeared healthy and he remains a safe option at the top of managers rotations as we head into 2024.

Blake Snell Throws Sim Game, Giants Non-Committal On Next Steps

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Blake Snell threw three innings in a simulated game on Sunday, marking a significant step in his preparation. Snell signed with the Giants on March 19, a date late enough that he won't be able to start the season with the team. The Giants aren't sure what the next steps are, but if Snell only needs one more sim game he could debut late in the first week, although that seems unlikely. Fantasy managers will want to pay close attention to Snell news before they set their lineups in the opening few weeks of the season.

Matt Chapman Crushes Second Homer Of The Spring

San Francisco Giants third basemanMatt Chapmanwent 2-for-4 with a homer in Friday's spring training game against the Chicago Cubs. Chapman's homer brought the Giants within one run in a wild game that ended in a 13-12 Giants victory. He has performed well in spring training for his new team, hitting for a .280 batting average and a .960 OPS in 25 AB. In 2024, ATC projections project Chapman to hit for a .235/.327/.437 slash line with 24 HR and 70 RBI. The home runs and RBI marks would be an improvement from his 2023 season in Toronto. With an ADP of 262.3, Chapman will likely only be a starting corner infielder for deeper leagues for managers willing to gamble on him in the unfriendly offensive environment at Oracle Park.

Wilmer Flores Returns To Action Friday

San Francisco Giants infielder Wilmer Flores (knee) returned to Cactus League action on Friday against the Chicago Cubs, starting at first base and batting third in the lineup. Flores returned to the field on Friday after he was scratched from Wednesday's Cactus League lineup due to minor knee soreness. The fact that the 32-year-old is already back on the field heading into the weekend suggests he won't open the 2024 regular season on the injured list next week. The Venezuelan veteran hit an impressive .284/.355/.509 with an .863 OPS, a career-high 23 home runs and 60 RBI in 126 games in 2023 in his third year in the Bay Area. At the very least, Flores should be a lineup regular for the Gigantes this year against left-handed pitching at either first base or designated hitter.

Blake Snell To Pitch In Minor-League Game Sunday

San Francisco Giants left-hander Blake Snell will pitch in a minor-league game in camp on Sunday, according to manager Bob Melvin. The next steps for Snell after that outing are to be determined. The Giants signed the 2023 National League Cy Young winner to a two-year deal last weekend, and the 31-year-old southpaw threw his first bullpen session in spring training on Thursday. Snell is not injured, but the fact that he signed so late in camp means that he will not be ready to be a part of the team's Opening Day rotation, starting next Thursday, March 28, when the Gigantes face his old team, the San Diego Padres. Snell has all kinds of strikeout upside, but he also led the league in walks in 2023, making him more of a No. 2 fantasy starter than an ace.
