The New York Mets have tweaked their starting rotation slightly, moving right-hander Luis Severino up to Sunday's contest at Wrigley Field against the Cubs, with left-hander David Peterson being pushed back. Severino will now get a better matchup, as he was previously slated to start against the first-place New York Yankees on Tuesday. Peterson will now likely start early next week in a tougher matchup against the Bombers. Severino allowed a season-high six earned runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out one in 6 1/3 innings his last time out against the Rangers. Overall, he's been serviceable with a 3.52 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 84 1/3 innings and 14 starts, but he's also carrying a career-low 17.4% strikeout rate. Peterson is a perfect 3-0 with a 3.97 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with only 12 K's in 22 2/3 innings over his four starts for the Mets in 2024.

While that was encouraging, Peterson posted a dismal 3-8 record to go along with a 5.03 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 128:50 K:BB across 27 appearances in 2023. He may eventually offer some streaming upside to fantasy managers but it will not come on Wednesday against the potent Dodgers offense.

Manager Carlos Mendoza said Peterson could be ready to return from the 60-day injured list as early as May 27, the first day he's eligible to be reinstated. The 28-year-old southpaw is trying to make a return from offseason hip surgery, so he'll be making his 2024 debut whenever he gets into a game. At the moment, the Mets' starting rotation is full and healthy, so there's a chance that Peterson is sent back to the minor leagues when he comes off the injured list. The former 20th overall pick in 2017 out of Oregon went 3-8 last year with a 5.03 ERA and 1.57 WHIP with 50 walks and a career-high 128 strikeouts in 111 innings over 27 appearances (21 starts).

"It feels different, but it feels different in a better way." Peterson underwent surgery to fix a labrum tear in his left hip last November and is trending toward a late May return. Had he been healthy, he may have had a chance to earn a rotation spot to start 2024. Peterson has been erratic throughout his career but has compiled several successful seasons. Given the lack of depth in the Mets rotation, Peterson could become a relevant fantasy name once he returns to the team.
