Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and two RBI in Tuesday's victory against the Colorado Rockies. Bellinger blasted his first homer of the year off Anthony Molina in the bottom of the seventh and it was a no doubter. The slugger had a strong 2023 in a prove it year for the Cubs and there is no reason that managers shouldn't expect him to put up similar numbers in 2024 as he remains in the heart of the lineup for the Cubs. Bellinger will look to keep it cooking versus Cal Quantrill in Wednesday's series finale.
Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger is scheduled to make his Cactus League debut on Wednesday and serve as the designated hitter. He will likely make his first spring start in the outfield on either Friday or Saturday. Bellinger didn't re-sign with the Cubs until recently, so he's behind in spring training and will start ramping up in games this week. It sill gives the 28-year-old former National League MVP several weeks to get ready for Opening Day, but don't be surprised if he gets out of the gates slow this year as a result. While he can also fill in at first base, most of his playing time will come as Chicago's starting center fielder. RotoBaller has Bellinger ranked as the No. 15 fantasy outfielder after a big bounce-back season in 2023 in which he hit .356 with 26 homers, 97 RBI and 20 steals in 130 games for the Cubbies. He cut his strikeout rate down, which was nice, but a career-high .319 BABIP could be a sign of regression in the average department in 2024.
Free agent outfielder Cody Bellinger and the Chicago Cubs agreed on a three-year, $80 million contract on Sunday. The contract also includes opt-outs after each of the deal's first two years. This is excellent news for dynasty managers and those who took Bellinger in earlier fantasy drafts. After struggling with the Dodgers in 2021 and 2022, Bellinger bounced back with the Cubs last season. Despite missing a month due to a knee injury, the 28-year-old slashed .307/.356/.525 with 26 home runs, 97 RBI, 95 runs, and 20 stolen bases over 556 plate appearances in 130 games. The former National League MVP will look to build on his 2023 campaign and is expected to hit cleanup for the Cubs in 2024. Bellinger is a solid pick at his current ADP of 53 in NFBC leagues, but that number could rise with the latest news of him returning to Chicago.
Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts said there have been "some discussions," but they haven't become a "negotiation" yet to re-sign outfielder Cody Bellinger. "We're just waiting, waiting for whenever he and his agent are going to engage. And it could be anytime now, or it could be a few weeks, we'll just see where it goes," Ricketts said. The Cubs have some interest in bringing the 28-year-old lefty slugger back on a cheaper, short-term deal, but it's unclear if Bellinger's agent, Scott Boras, is interested in that. The former MVP bounced back in a big way for the Cubbies last year, hitting .307/.356/.525 with 26 home runs, 97 RBI, 20 stolen bases and 95 runs scored despite missing a month with a knee injury. Bellinger cut his strikeout rate but had a fortunate BABIP and didn't hit the ball all that hard, pointing to potential regression in 2024.
